Instrument Cluster Display
The diagnostic codes that are activated by the ECM can be viewed on the Instrument Cluster LCD displays. The Service Diagnostic Mode of the Instrument Cluster allows service personnel to see the actual values and readings of certain components on the machine. Also, the Service Diagnostic Mode shows the faults that were detected by the machine ECM. The Service Diagnostic Mode of the Instrument Cluster allows service personnel to troubleshoot the faults that were detected by the machine ECM. When the Instrument Cluster is in the service mode, the diagnostic code for any detected fault of the machine electronic control system is shown on the LCD display area of the Instrument Cluster. For more information on viewing diagnostic codes using the Instrument Cluster, refer to Troubleshooting, "Using the Operator Monitor to Determine Diagnostic Codes".The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)
The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is a software program that is used to access real time machine data. The service technician will use the ET in order to perform the diagnostic maintenance on the machine. For more information on viewing the diagnostic information using ET, refer to Troubleshooting, "Using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician to Determine Diagnostic Codes". Diagnostic Codes
The machine ECM will use a diagnostic code in order to specify each detected problem. The diagnostic code consists of three identifiers (MID, CID and FMI). The diagnostic code is shown in the display area of the Instrument Cluster or on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool. The code identifiers are listed below: Module Identifier (MID) - The MID is a three digit code. The MID specifies which ECM has diagnosed and activated the diagnostic code. The MID, the CID, and the FMI are shown at the same time. Some Module identifiers are listed below: Machine Electronic Control ... 039Engine Electronic Control ... 036Note: The MID of the machine ECM is 039. When troubleshooting the Machine Electronic Control System, ensure that number 039 precedes the diagnostic code CID and FMI.Component Identifier (CID) - The CID is a four digit code. The CID indicates the component or system that the ECM is activating the diagnostic code for. The CID and the FMI are displayed immediately after the MID is displayed. The CID and the FMI are displayed at the same time. For a list of all possible Component Identifiers that can be activated by the Machine ECM, see Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Code List".Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) - The FMI is a two digit code. The FMI identifies the condition that the ECM has detected as the cause of the active diagnostic code. The CID and the FMI are displayed immediately after the MID is displayed. The CID and the FMI are displayed at the same time. The following table shows the FMI codes and the associated conditions.
