Removal Procedure
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: These engines have two water temperature regulators. The procedure that is described will work for both of the water temperature regulators. Only one water temperature regulator is described for the removal procedure. Follow the same procedure for the second water temperature regulator.
Drain the coolant from the engine to a level that is below the water temperature regulators. Use a suitable container for storage or disposal of the coolant.

Remove two bolts (1), elbow (2), and the O-ring seal.

Remove gasket (4), three bolts (3), and cover assembly (5).

Remove gasket (7) and water temperature regulator (8).
If necessary, remove plug (6). Installation Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
If the water temperature regulator is installed incorrectly, it will cause the engine to overheat.
If the water temperature regulator is installed incorrectly, it will cause the engine to overheat.
Note: These engines have two water temperature regulators. The procedure that is described will work for both of the water temperature regulators. Only one water temperature regulator is described for the installation procedure. Follow the same procedure for the second water temperature regulator.Note: Check the condition of the gaskets and the O-rings. If the gaskets or the O-rings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Install plug (6), if the plug was removed during the disassembly.
Install gasket (7).
Install water temperature regulator (8).

Install gasket (4) and cover assembly (5) with two bolts (3).

Lightly lubricate the bore of elbow (2) and the O-ring seal with glycerin. Install the O-ring seal and elbow (2) with two bolts (1).
Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct fluid and the correct filling procedure. Note: For more detailed information regarding the water temperature regulators, refer to the Specifications Manual, "Water Temperature Regulator".
