Remove the rear tires. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove and Install".
Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install". Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the oil from the axle housing into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Open the engine guard on the right side of the machine and remove the engine access panel on the right side of the machine in order to access the hose assemblies.

Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and (2).

Disconnect hose assembly (3).
Remove bolt (4) and yoke assembly (5).

Install a suitable lifting device to rear axle (6). The weight of the rear axle is approximately 1590 kg (3500 lb).

Remove bolts (7) and (8).
Use the suitable lifting device to carefully remove rear axle (6). The weight of the rear axle is approximately 1590 kg (3500 lb).
