Information:
Probable Causes
Air inlet and exhaust system
Fuel injector
Turbocharger
Atmospheric pressure sensor
"Delivered Fuel Volume" and/or "Smoke Limit Fuel Volume"
Flash file
Fuel quality
Valve adjustmentRecommended Actions
Air Inlet and Exhaust System
Check the air inlet system for restrictions and/or for leaks.
Check for an air filter restriction.
Check for derates and for alarms.
Perform a visual inspection of the system for restrictions and/or for leaks.
Check the exhaust system for restrictions.
Repair any leaks that were found. Remove any restrictions that were found. Replace any damaged components that were found.Fuel Injector
Perform the "Cylinder Cutout Test". Use similar conditions for the test that were experienced during operation. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoids".Turbocharger
Verify that the turbocharger has not failed. Periodic inspection and cleaning is recommended for the turbocharger compressor housing (inlet side).Atmospheric Pressure Sensor
Check the atmospheric pressure sensor for dirt and/or for debris. Remove the dirt and/or the debris. The atmospheric pressure should be between 50 kPa (7.2 psi) and 110 kPa (16 psi). The atmospheric pressure will vary depending on your altitude. If there is an active diagnostic code, perform the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Analog Sensor (Active)".Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor, "Delivered Fuel Volume", and/or "Smoke Limit Fuel Volume"
Monitor the status of "Delivered Fuel Volume" and "Torque Limit Fuel Volume" while the engine is operating under full load. If "Delivered Fuel Volume" is equal to or almost equal to "Torque Limit Fuel Volume" and "Delivered Fuel Volume" is less than "Smoke Limit Fuel Volume", the electronics are operating correctly. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
Verify that there are no active diagnostic codes for the intake manifold pressure sensor.
Monitor the status of "Intake Manifold Pressure" for normal operation on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). When the engine is not running, "Intake Manifold Pressure" should read approximately 0 kPag (0 psia).Note: A problem with the "Smoke Limit Fuel Volume" will only cause black smoke during acceleration. A problem with the "Smoke Limit Fuel Volume" will not cause black smoke during steady state operation.Flash File
Verify that the correct flash file is installed. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming" for more information.Fuel Quality
Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold weather operation.Valve Adjustment
Check the valve adjustment. Refer to the Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting manual for more information.
