Schematic of the "Hoe Auxiliary Valve 2 (Port A)" solenoidThis diagnostic code is associated with the8th Function Hoe Auxiliary Valve No. 2 (Port A) solenoid. An FMI 03 means that the ECM has determined that the voltage of the solenoid circuit is above normal. Possible causes of the diagnostic code are:
The energize circuit of the solenoid is shorted to another power supply circuit.
The ECM has failed, but is unlikely.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 2244 FMI 03 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.System Response:
The system will not initialize after power is cycled.
The hydraulic functions for Extend, Retract, Reverse, and Forward positions are lost after power is cycled.
There will be no effect to the systems after power up until the next reset of the Valve ECM.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID ENERGIZE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the Hoe Auxiliary Valve No. 2 (Port A) solenoid from the machine harness connector.
Disconnect the J1 machine harness connector from the ECM.
On the J1 ECM connector, measure the resistance from contact J1-61 (wire T790-GY) to all the other contact pins used in the connector. Expected Result:The measurements are all greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - There are no shorts in the wires. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness or in the wires. The short is to the wire with the low resistance reading.Repair: Repair, or replace, the machine harness. Ensure that the problem has been corrected.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE ECM.Reconnect the J1 machine harness connector to the ECM. The machine harness connector for the solenoid remains disconnected.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Observe the status of the active diagnostic code.Expected Result:The diagnostic code of FMI 03 changes to an FMI 05 diagnostic code. Results:
OK - The FMI 03 changed to an FMI 05 diagnostic code. The FMI 05 was activated because the solenoid circuit is disconnected. The ECM has responded correctly to the condition of an open solenoid circuit. Reconnect the solenoid to the harness. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The FMI 03 diagnostic code did not change to an FMI 05 diagnostic code. The active diagnostic code did not change after the solenoid was disconnected from the ECM.Repair: The ECM has not responded correctly to the condition of an open solenoid circuit. The ECM might have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, contact your Dealership Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. If the ECM needs to be replaced, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOPTest Step 3. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE.
Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors. Check
