Place bearings (8) and pinion (4) in position in carrier (7) .
Install retainer (5) with enough shims (6) so there is end play that can be measured. Add shims (6) or remove shims (6) in order to give end play for pinion (4) of 0.05 0.03 mm (0.002 0.001 inch).
Tighten the bolt for the retainer (1) evenly to a torque of 22 N m (16 lb ft). Turn the differential in order to place bearings (11) in position.
Loosen the bolts for retainer (1). Tighten the bolts finger tight. Turn the differential and measure the amount of free movement between pinion (4) and bevel gear (12). The correct backlash is 0.36 0.13 mm (0.014 0.005 inch).Note: If necessary, adjust the backlash. In order to adjust the backlash, remove lock (10) and rotate ring (9). Repeat Step 3 and Step 4.
Use a feeler gauge in order to measure the clearance between retainer (1) and cover (3) .
Remove retainer (1) .
Install enough shims (2) so that the measurement is 0.03 0.03 mm (0.001 0.001 inch) thicker than the measurement of the clearance in Step 5.
Install retainer (1) .
