Information:
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam, and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove the cooling system pressure cap only when the engine is stopped and is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Lift the lever on the pressure cap to relieve the cooling system pressure before removing the pressure cap.Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot because the hose can come off which could result in burns.Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the cooling system information in Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling system components.
Note: This procedure pertains only to Caterpillar Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC). This procedure does not pertain to machines that are shipped from the factory with Extended Life Coolant (ELC). Also this procedure does not pertain to the machines that are maintained with Extended Life Coolant (ELC).If the coolant is dirty or if you observe any foaming in the cooling system, drain the coolant before the recommended interval.

Open the drain valve for the engine cooling system. Drain the coolant into a suitable container. The drain valve is located on the bottom radiator tube.
Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10 percent concentration of cooling system cleaner.
Start and run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.
When the engine is stopped, flush the cooling system with water until the draining water is clear. Drain the water into a suitable container.
Close the drain valve.
Add the coolant solution. Add coolant slowly to help avoid air locks, 20 L (5 US gal) per minute.ReferenceFor additional information on the cooling system capacity, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the machine that is being serviced.
Start the engine. Run the engine with the cooling system pressure cap removed. Run the engine until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.Note: If you are using Caterpillar antifreeze, do not add supplemental coolant additive or change the coolant conditioner element at this time.
