This Technical Information Bulletin replaces the 02February 2005 TIB "Incorrect SENS Battery Chargers Installed on Griffin-Packaged 3306, 3406, 3412, and 3456 Engine Generator Sets". Disregard the 02February 2005 TIB.Problem
From the period of May 2004 through December 2004, incorrect SENS Battery Chargers may have been installed on Griffin-packaged engine generator sets.Orders requiring a 120 VDC, 60 Hz, UL Listed battery charger with alarms (Caterpillar part number: 118-4304 Battery Charger, SENS part number: FC24-10-2011U) may have received a 230 VDC, 50/60 Hz Battery Charger with alarms (Caterpillar part number: 119-8978 Battery Charger, SENS part number: FCA24-10-44115). The Griffin-installed battery charger (119-8978 Battery Charger) is not UL Listed.There is no known immediate danger associated with operating the 230 VDC, 50/60 Hz Battery Charger ( 119-8978 Battery Charger ) with a 120 VDC, 60 Hz source. However, if the charger was not field configured for the proper line voltage, the charger may not operate properly.Solution
Affected 3306, 3406 & G3406 packages must have the battery charger replaced. Dealers should order 118-4304 Battery Charger from Morton Parts.Use packaging materials from the new charger to return the incorrect charger. Mark the package exterior with enclosed charger part number ( 119-8978 Battery Charger ) and return to:Caterpillar Inc.445 Green Valley RdGriffin, GA 30224Attn: Keith JonesAffected 3456, 3412 & G3412 packages can have the battery charger rewired. Refer to the wiring diagram below. Remove the charger supply wire from terminal 131 and reconnect it to terminal 142. Note: If a UL Listed battery charger is required, the battery charger must be replaced. Dealers should order 118-4304 Battery Charger from Morton Parts and return the incorrect charger according to the instructions above.
