Open the battery disconnect switch access cover. 1. Insert the key into the disconnect switch and turn the switch to the ON position. 2. Make sure the circuit breaker reset button remains depressed. 3. This machine is equipped with an engine neutral start system. The system allows engine starting only when the hydraulic activation control lever is in the LOCKED position. Move the hydraulic activation control lever to the LOCKED position.4. Move the implement control levers to the HOLD position. 5. Turn engine start switch (1) to the ON position. 6. All of the indicators on the monitor panel should be activated for approximately 2.5 seconds and the action alarm should sound for one second. If any of the indicators are not activated or the action alarm does not sound, have the electrical system checked and have all the necessary repairs made before starting the engine.7. Turn engine speed dial (2) to position "1".8. Turn engine start switch (1) to the START position.9. Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts.Starting Below 0°C (32°F) (If Equipped with Ether Starting Aid)
Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine.Use sparingly, excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.Use ether for cold starting purposes only. After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for the starting motor to cool before cranking again.
1. Repeat steps 1 through 8 in Starting Above 0°C (32°F). 2. Push the front of starting aid (ether) switch and release.3. Operate the starting aid switch every two seconds while cranking the engine. Continue use until the engine starts and is running smoothly.4. Release the engine start switch key when engine starts. Ether start cylinder or bottle container is located in the radiator compartment. See Ether Starting Aid Cylinder in the When Required section for container information. For starting below - 18°C (0°F), use of the optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater, or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below - 23°C (- 10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for Cold Weather Operation Recommendations SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting with Jumper Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode resulting in personnel injury.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow the jump start cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump start cables.Improper jump start procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect the battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and the battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump start only with an energy source with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump
