Introduction
The camshaft gear will interfere with the installation of the 1W-1168 Front Housing Plate Assembly on the following cylinder blocks: 0R-4351 Cylinder Block , 0R-4352 Cylinder Block , 0R-4353 Cylinder Block and 0R-4354 Cylinder Block . The following procedure is for the installation of the 1W-1168 Front Housing Plate Assembly without completely removing the camshaft. The procedure will also eliminate resetting the valves.Note: The valve cover that is shipped on all of the cylinder blocks is installed only in order to prevent debris from entering the engine during shipping or storage of the engine. This valve cover is also used while the engine is being dressed. Several combinations of the cylinder block exist. Use your old valve cover if the valve cover is different from the cover that was received with the cylinder block. The cylinder blocks that are returned to Caterpillar are not inspected for engine rotation or valve adjustment.Installation Procedure
Place the cylinder block on the flywheel end. The cylinder block must be positioned in this manner in order to prevent the lifters from sliding out of the lifter bores when the camshaft is partially removed.
Remove the pushrods by rocking the rocker arms. Do not loosen the rocker arm adjusting screw. Mark each pushrod in order to allow the pushrods to be reinstalled in the same location.
Pull the lifters far enough away from the camshaft lobe in order to provide clearance for pulling the camshaft.
Pull out the camshaft far enough for the installation of the 1W-1168 Front Housing Plate Assembly . Install the plate.
Lower the camshaft back into the proper position.Note: The 0R-4354 Cylinder Block will require the camshaft gear to be unbolted before the plate can be installed. Reassemble the camshaft gear to the camshaft once the plate has been installed.
Push the lifters against the camshaft lobes.
Use the method from Step 2 in order to reinstall the pushrods in the same location. The valves will not require any readjustment if the pushrods are returned to the proper location.Reference: Consult the following manuals for more information.
