PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR INSPECTING AND POSSIBLY REWORKING THE CYLINDER HEAD ON CERTAIN REMAN C27 AND 32 ENGINES AND LONG BLOCKS IN DEALER PARTS STOCK

PROBLEM
The existing cylinder head core plugs can fail on certain Reman C27 and 32 Engines and Long Blocks built from November, 2011 through March, 2012 that use 357-7396 Cylinder Head casting. If the plug fails it will cause coolant to flood the crankcase. Affected Engines or Long blocks may still be in dealer stocks, and may not have been reworked per a prior Technical Information Bulletin.
ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect and possibly rework the following engines and long blocks in dealer parts stock:
10R7243, 10R7244, 20R0020, 20R0428, 20R0429, 20R0519 C27 Engines with LET prefix, range LET00200 through LET00352.
10R8902, 10R8904, 10R8915, 10R9819 C32 Engines with KCM prefix, range KCM00202 through KCM00287.
20R-0163, 20R-0182, 20R-0763 C27 and C32 Long Blocks with date codes from 1 November, 2011 through 31 March, 2012.
Check for a cylinder head casting part number 357-7396, near inlet port as shown in Image 1. If found, remove valve mechanism covers and inspect twelve (12) core plugs near the rocker stands, typical pair shown in Image 1. If nearly flush with casting top surface, all twelve must be replaced. Image 2 shows a step in the bore that plug must be below. Image 3 shows the correct installation.
PROCEDURE FOR REPLACING PLUGS
1. Remove Valve Mechanism Cover
2. Remove Valve Mechanism Cover Base
3. Remove Rocker Arm Assemblies
4. Remove core plugs
5. Clean out old sealant from bore
6. Install new 3B-0623 Cup Plugs using blue Loctite item number 11358. Drive core plug to a depth of 7 mm (0.28 inch) from surface of cylinder head. Core plug must be at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) past the step. See Image 3.
7. Reassemble rocker arms assemblies
8. Check and reset valve lash on complete engines as needed (it is not set on long blocks).
9. Reassemble Valve Mechanism Cover Base

11. Repackage as needed

SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
Submit one claim for all cylinder head that are reworked in dealer parts stock.Three (3) hours are allowed to replace plugs, for each cylinder head that is reworked on an engine or long block in dealer parts stock. A quantity of 12 3B-0623 Plugs are allowed for each cylinder head reworked in dealer parts stock.

Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
