Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (BIO HYDO)
Caterpillar now has available a biodegradable oil for use in machine hydraulic systems and hydrostatic transmissions. This oil meets the stringent requirements for the hydraulic system components and satisfies customer needs for a hydraulic oil that is readily biodegradable and nontoxic. This oil is formulated with vegetable based oil from the rape seed and selected additives. This oil is to be used in hydraulic systems only, and not in compartments with brakes, clutches, etc. Use of the BIO HYDO is not recommended for operation at tank or actual oil temperatures below -7°C (20°F) or above 82°C (180°F). The oil within the specified temperature range has a viscosity similar to an SAE 10W Oil or the ISO VG of 32 to 46.For BIO HYDO oil, continuous heavy-duty operation is limited to +32°C (90°F) ambient temperature. Operation at ambient temperatures above +32°C (90°F) should be limited to light-duty cycles and short periods of time. Do not use BIO HYDO oil in hydraulic systems with clutches or brakes.Contact your Caterpillar dealer for additional information on this new product and its potential use.Commercial Oils
If Cat oils cannot be used, the following commercial classifications can be used in the hydraulic and hydrostatic transmissions:* API CF-4/SG, CE/SG, or CD/SG* MIL-L-2104EPremium industrial hydraulic oils that have passed the Vickers vane pump test (35VQ25) and/or have a minimum of 0.09 percent zinc additive may also be used. These oils should have antiwear, antifoam, antirust, and antioxidation additives for heavy-duty use as stated by the oil supplier. ISO viscosity grade of 46 would normally be selected.Power Shift Transmission Oil
Cat Transmission/Drive Train Oil (TDTO)
Cat Transmission/Drive Train Oil is balanced to give maximum frictional material life in power shift transmissions and eliminate brake chatter in wet brake applications. Manual transmissions which have had the API CD/Cat TO-2 oil recommendation should now use this oil. This oil has passed the requirements for the new Caterpillar TO-4 oil specification which not only includes the frictional requirements, but also has gear wear requirements. This oil should be used for lubrication of winch, clutch plates, gears, and bearings. This oil is offered in several viscosity grades, including SAE 50, for maximum component life at high ambient temperatures and heavy-duty cycles.Maximum transmission life and performance can be achieved, by using:* Cat Transmission/Drive Train Oil (TDTO)
This oil is formulated for transmissions and drive trains only, and should not be used in engines. Shortened engine life results.
Multigrade oils are currently not blended by Caterpillar for use in transmissions. Multigrade oils which use high molecular weight polymers as viscosity index improvers lose their viscosity effectiveness. This is because of permanent and temporary shear of the viscosity index improver. And therefore, multigrade oils are not recommended for transmission and drive train compartments. The Cat TO-4 specification does include a test for multigrade oil shear stability and multiviscosity oils with adequate shear stability may be available in the future.Commercial Oils
If the Cat Transmission/Drive Train Oil is not used, then commercial oils meeting the Caterpillar TO-4 specification should be used:*
