(D) Hydraulic cylinder for the shells In this test, a pressure gauge is installed in the circuit for the shells. The shells are placed in a closed position. Hydraulic pressure will be applied to the shells which will not be able to close further. Pressure will increase against the resistance of the shells. This will cause a relief valve in the host machine to open. At the same time, a reading of the pressure gauge will be observed. This figure will show the maximum operating pressure for the shells.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns.To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.

Lower the work tool to the ground and stop the engine of the host machine. Relieve the pressure from the hydraulic system. Refer to the Service Manual for the host machine for the proper procedure.

Remove the plug. Install Tooling (A) and Tooling (B) on test fitting (1). Note: The test fitting is present in the maintenance kit.
Start the engine of the host machine and operate the machine until the hydraulic oil reaches normal operating temperature.
Open the shells of the work tool. Close the shells and continue to hold the control in the CLOSE position in order to allow the cylinder to stall. Observe the pressure on the gauge. The pressure should be 32500 2500 kPa (4715 360 psi). If the pressure is not within the specification, the pressure must be adjusted accordingly. Refer to the Service Manual for the host machine for the proper procedure.
After adjustments have been made, stop the engine on the host machine and relieve the hydraulic pressure. Remove the tooling from the work tool.
Install the plug.
Air must be purged from the work tool before operation. Refer to Service Manual, "Hydraulic System Air - Purge" for the proper procedure.
