Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a high inlet temperature for the catalytic converter. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Trouble Codes" for information about diagnostic trouble codes. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these engine events. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters".
Table 1
Engine Events
J1939 Code and Description Conditions which Generate the Code System Response
4289-0 Aftertreatment #1 Three Way Catalytic Converter Intake Gas Temperature : High - most severe (3) The inlet temperature for the catalytic converter is above the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The red stop lamp is illuminated.
The engine is shut down.
4289-15 Aftertreatment #1 Three Way Catalytic Converter Intake Gas Temperature : High - least severe (1) The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is illuminated. Probable Causes
Fuel quality
Ignition system
Incorrect engine timing
Engine misfire
Plugging of the catalyst substrate
DetonationRecommended Actions
Fuel Quality
The fuel must meet the following quality standards:
For natural gas, the Low Heat Value (LHV) of the fuel must be greater than 750 BTU/cu ft.
The sulfur content must be less than 10 ppm.
The chlorinated compounds must be less than 10 ppm.
Silicon compounds or siloxanes must not be present in the fuel.Biogas, sewage gas, and digester gas must not be used for this engine.Ignition System
Check the status parameter for transformer secondary output voltage percentage for each cylinder. Check that there is a consistent output voltage percentage for each cylinder. Isolate any problem cylinders and perform the following checks:
Check the connections between the ignition transformers and the spark plugs. An improperly installed spark plug can cause arcing and misfires.
Check the transformer insulators for pin holes that are caused by arcing. Arcing can cause misfires.
Check for corrosion on the terminal of the spark plug and check for wear on the electrode. Both conditions can cause misfires. Losses or misfires are caused by shorts or excessive moisture.Maintain the spark plug according to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.Incorrect Engine Timing
Engine timing that is excessively retarded can affect exhaust temperatures and coolant temperatures. The ignition timing for this engine is automatically calibrated during engine startup. If a problem with the timing calibration is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Speed/Timing - Test" for additional information.Verify that the timing is programmed correctly. Refer to Systems Operation, "System Configuration Parameters" for Information that is related to setting the timing parameters.Engine Misfire
An engine misfire allows unburned gas into the exhaust system. The excess gas can be burned in the inlet of the catalytic converter. High exhaust temperature at the inlet of the catalytic converter will result.Check the engine for a misfire condition. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Misfires, Runs Rough or Is Unstable" for details.Plugging of the Catalyst Substrate
If the catalyst substrate becomes plugged with debris, ash, or oil build-up, the exhaust temperatures at the inlet of the catalytic converter will increase. Damage to the catalyst substrate may result.Check the back-pressure of the
