Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Verify that the fuel shut off valve located under the fuel tank is shut off prior to performing any fuel system maintenance.

Turn OFFthe fuel system ball valve (1) located under the fuel tank.
Remove the lower left-hand service access panel to perform maintenance. The primary filter/water separator is located on the frame at the left-hand rear of the machine.

Loosen the drain valve (2) on the bottom of the water separator.
Allow the water and the sediment to drain into a suitable container.
Tighten the drain valve (2) .Note: The water separator is under suction during normal engine operation. Tightening the drain valve prevents air leakage into the fuel system.
If the engine fails to start or if there is a power loss, change the fuel filter. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace".
