Information:
Machine preparation
Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel. Lower the attachments to the ground.
Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel away from the machine or in the view of the operator.
Engage the parking brake.
Place the transmission in NEUTRAL.Performance Test
Steering Cycle Times
The steering time is affected by the amount of oil flow that is produced by the steering pump. Check the steering times in order to determine if there is a problem with the steering pump.
Perform the machine preparation for testing.
Start the machine. Run the machine at HIGH idle. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature. Raise the bucket slightly off the ground. Make sure that no people or no other machines are in the immediate area of the machine so that you can articulate the machine safely.
Run the machine at LOW idle.
Tap the horn. Turn the machine from left to right. Record the steering time from stop to stop.
Run the machine at HIGH idle.
Turn the machine from left to right. Record the steering time from stop to stop.
Turn the machine from right to left. Record the steering time from stop to stop.
The steering times for machines that are equipped with conventional steering are listed in Table 1.
Table 1
Steering Cycle Times
Idle     Direction     914G     IT14G     IT14G
LOW     Left to Right     5.2 seconds     5.2 seconds     5.2 seconds
HIGH     Left to Right     3.0 0.6 seconds     3.0 0.6 seconds     3.0 0.6 seconds
HIGH     Right to Left     3.0 0.6 seconds     3.0 0.6 seconds     3.0 0.6 seconds    Note: Table 1 lists the specifications for the turns. While the parking brake is engaged, the difference between the left turn and the right turn should increase by no more than 0.2 seconds.
Lower the boom and place the bucket flat on the ground.
Reduce engine speed to LOW idle.
Stop the engine.Compare the test results with the cycle times that are listed. The steering pump should be working properly if the cycle times match the cycle times that are listed. If the cycle times are not correct one of the following conditions may be present:
The pressure setting for the backup relief valve is not within specifications.
The pump may have excessive wear. The main relief pressure should be measured. If the main relief pressure is low, the cycle times should be retested after the main relief pressure has been corrected.Reference: For more information on testing and adjusting the main relief valve, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve - Test and Adjust" for
