If the inspection is to take place on a transmissioninstalled in a vehicle, the valve must be removed.Removing Bypass Valve Group1). With the engine stopped, remove six 8T4136Bolts that attach the 184-1278 Access Plate to the 175-5371 TransmissionGuard Assembly. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2-Left side view2). Disconnect harness from bypass switch.Place suitable container to catch oil that will drain when valve is removed.3). Remove four M-8 x 1.25 bolts and washers,then remove bypass valve. Carefully remove "O" ring from valve body andset aside for reinstallation later. Illustration 3
Preparation For Inspection4). Remove the 164-7577 switch group from thebypass valve group. Note: The spring and spool will try to pushthe switch out of the body as you unthread the switch. If the spool isstuck in the body and does not push back at the switch, the assembly isdefective. Order a new 209-6632 bypass valve assembly and go the "valveinstallation" section step 13.5). Remove the 3T0688 spool from the spoolbody.6). Remove the 133-2199 spring from the spoolbody.7). Visually inspect the body for burrs andfins in the spool land area shown in illustration 4. If burrs and or finsare present, do not attempt to rework this body.Order a new 209-6632 bypass valve assemblyand go the "valve installation" section, step 13.

8). If no burrs or fins are present, reinstallthe 3T-0688 spool without the spring, stem up, back into the spool body.It should drop freely into the bottom of the spool body.Inspection With Gage9). Insert the gage into the switch port onthe spool body. If the gage washer sits nearly even with the bypass valvehousing, the housing is good. See Illustration 5.
Illustration 510) If the gage washer stands above the bypassvalve housing, the spool is blocked and the valve is defective. See illustration6. Install a new 209-6632 bypass valve assembly. Go to "valve installation"section, step 13.
Illustration 6Valve Assembly11). If the original body is good, place ithorizontally on a bench. Install one 209-6584 spacer inside the 3T0688spool. Reinstall 133-2199 spring inside the spool capturing the spacer.Insert the spool, spacer, and spring assembly into the body. Reinstallthe 164-7577 switch in the body and torque to 80+/-10 N-M (60+/-8 LB-FT).See illustration 7.
Illustration 712). Remove the 6V3965 nipple from the by-passvalve group. Install a 6V0484 90-degree elbow assembly into the by-passvalve group. Reinstall the 6V3965 nipple into the elbow assembly. Orientthe elbow assembly 30-degrees down from the centerline of the spool assembly.Torque nipple and elbow to 35+/-3 N-M (25+/-2 LB-FT). See illustration8.
Illustration 8Valve Installation13). Install 2H6184 "O" ring seal in valvebody. Install four M-8 x 1.25 bolts and washers, then reinstall the bypassgroup to transmission. Caution: Carefully hand start each bolt andtorque bolts to 28+/-7 N-M (20+/-5 LB-FT). Do not over-torque these bolts.14) Proceed with Step 15 of the "Rework Procedure"
