The CS-machines have a smooth drum and optional padded drum shell. The CP-machines have a padded drum.The typical application for a smooth-drum machine includes highway and street construction, airport construction, and building site preparation. The smooth-drum machine is used when a smooth surface is desired. The typical application for a padded-drum machine includes landfill liner compaction and compacting large trenches.The machines are powered by a Caterpillar C4.4B engine with ACERT™ engine technology. The engine meets US EPA Tier 3, EU Stage IIIA, and China Stage II emissions standards. This engine has a gross power rating of 74.5 kW (99.9 hp) at 2200 rpm.A roll-over protection structure, falling object protection structure (ROPS/FOPS) is standard on the machines.CS44B machine operating weights are as follows:

Articulation Area
(1) Steering frame lockThe front and rear frames of the machine are connected in the articulation area. A vertical pin in the articulation area provides a steering angle of 37 degrees. A horizontal pin provides an oscillation angle of 15 degrees.Steering frame lock (1) can be installed to lock the front and rear frames together, thereby preventing the machine from turning.
The articulation area has no clearance for a person when the machine is turned. Before the machine is worked on, lifted, or transported on another vehicle, the steering frame lock pin must be installed. Unexpected machine articulation can cause injury or death.
