Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove". The information is in this manual.
Remove the universal joint. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Universal Joint - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the oil system.
Drain the fluid from the differential. Drain the fluid into a suitable container. The differential has a capacity of 19 L (5 US gal).

Install Tool (A) and Tool (B) under the frame of the machine, as shown. Raise the machine 101.6 mm (4 inch).

Install Tool (C) under the axle housing, as shown.

Loosen retaining nut (1) and disconnect tube (2) from adapter (3) .

Loosen retaining nut (4) and disconnect tube (5) from adapter (6) .

Remove eight nuts (7) from the axle housing.

Carefully lower and slowly lower the axle housing until hose (8) is exposed. Loosen retaining nut (9) and disconnect hose (8) from the differential.

Install Tool (D) to the differential, as shown. Remove ten bolts (10) from the differential. Leave two bolts at the top of the differential in order to hold the differential in the axle housing.

Install two 3/8" - 16 NC forcing screws (11) to the differential. Remove two bolts (12) from the differential. Use the forcing screws to remove the differential from the axle housing. The differential weighs 204 kg (450 lb).
