21. Remove bearing cup (22) from the carrier.Assemble Differential & Carrier
1. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup, and install bearing cup (2) in carrier (1). Make sure the bearing cup is seated against the bottom of the counterbore. 2. Heat bearing cones (4) and (5) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install bearing cones (4) and (5) on pinion (3). 3. Use a suitable driver, and install ring (6) on the pinion. 4. Fasten a hoist to the pinion, and put pinion (3) in position in carrier (1) as shown. 5. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup, and install bearing cup (7) in cage (8). Make sure the bearing cup is seated against the bottom of the counterbore. Do not install the seals in cage (8) at this time.6. Fasten a hoist to cage (8), and put cage (8) in position on carrier (1) without any shims. Install six bolts (9) evenly spaced. Tighten the bolts evenly to keep the clearance between the cage and carrier the same all the way around as nearly as possible, and turn the pinion with tool (D) at the same time until the pinion bearings have enough preload so that a torque of more than 4.0 N m (35 lb in) is necessary to turn the pinion. Rotate the pinion several times.7. Adjust the tightness of bolts (8) evenly until a torque of 3.9 1.1 N m (35 10 lb in) is required to turn the pinion.8. Use a feeler gauge, and measure the gap between the cage and carrier to find the approximate number of shims needed for the proper bearing preload.9. Remove cage (8), but do not turn the pinion.10. Install shims as needed between the cage and carrier to adjust the preload on the pinion bearings until a torque of 3.9 1.1 N m (35 10 lb in) is necessary to turn the pinion. If the cage must be removed to add or remove shims, do not turn the pinion while the cage is removed. 11. Install seal (10) in carrier (8) with tool (D). Install O-ring seal (11) on the carrier as shown.
Make sure cage (8) is kept even during installation to prevent damage to the seal.
12. Make sure shims (12) are in position on carrier (1). Put cage (8) in position on the carrier, and install bolts (9) that hold it. Tighten bolts (9) evenly. If large housing (13) has been replaced, it will be necessary to ream the holes in the flange of the large housing to match the holes in the bevel gear.13. If a new large housing is to be used, use the following procedure to ream the holes in the flange of the large housing:a. Fasten a hoist to the large housing, and put large housing (13) in position in bevel gear (14).b. Using the bevel gear as a guide, ream one hole to 19.065 .020 mm (.7506 .0008 in).c. Install a bolt
