A new spacer plate gasket must be installed when the cylinder head is removed. See REMOVE AND INSTALL SPACER PLATE.Install Cylinder Head
1. Thoroughly clean the spacer plate and bottom surface of the cylinder head. Install a new head gasket and water seals. Do not use any adhesives. A new spacer plate gasket must be used when the cylinder head is installed. See REMOVE AND INSTALL SPACER PLATE. 2. Fasten tooling (A) to the cylinder head as shown. Install cylinder head (2). Make sure the gasket is in position between elbow (1) and the watercooled exhaust manifold. The weight of the cylinder head for a 3408 Generator Set is approximately 125 kg (275 lb.). The weight of the cylinder head for the 3412 Generator Sets is approximately 172 kg (380 lb.). Put clean engine oil on the threads of all the cylinder head bolts.3. Install two bolts to hold the cylinder head in position. Do not tighten the bolts at this time. 4. Install rocker shaft assembly(ies) (3) on the cylinder head. Install the bolts that hold the rocker shaft assembly and cylinder head to the spacer plate. Do not install the 3/8" bolts in holes (4) at this time. The 3412 Generator Set will have five holes without bolts. Steps 5a through 5g are for 3408 Generator Sets only.5. Use the tightening sequence below to tighten the bolts that hold the cylinder head in position.a) Tighten bolts 1 through 14 in sequence to 271 27 N m (200 20 lb.ft.).b) Tighten bolts 1 through 14 in sequence to 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.).c) Do Step 5b again.d) Tighten bolts 15 through 18 in sequence to 271 27 N m (200 20 lb.ft.).e) Tighten bolts 15 through 18 in sequence to 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.).f) Do Step 5e again.g) Tighten the 3/8" bolts to 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.). Steps 6a through 6g are for 3412 Generator Sets only.6. Use the tightening sequence below to tighten the bolts that hold the cylinder head in position.a) Tighten bolts 1 through 20 in sequence to 271 27 N m (200 20 lb.ft.).b) Tighten bolts 1 through 20 in sequence to 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.).c) Do Step 6b again.d) Tighten bolts 21 through 26 in sequence to 271 27 N m (200 20 lb.ft.).e) Tighten bolts 21 through 26 in sequence to 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.).f) Do Step 6e again.g) Tighten the 3/8" bolts to 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.). 7. If the cylinder head on the left side was removed, install thermocouple (5). Steps 8 through 12 are for machines that do not have watercooled exhaust manifolds and turbochargers.8. Install clamp (6), lifting bracket (7) and bracket (8) if the cylinder head on the left side of the machine
