PROBLEM
The housing motors in the final drives need to be replaced on certain 385B, 385B L and 5090B Excavators. Due to a possible housing material weakness, the former 1994553 Housing Motor may break (Brittle fracture) at the area where the bearing is seated (see Illustration 1). The latest 1994553 Housing with better material specifications will improve the performance and durability of the final drives

Remove all former 1994553 Housing Motors from parts stock.
***** Affected Product *****
Replace the former 1994553 Housing Motor by the updated 1994553 Housing Motor with improved material specification. Follow the disassembly and assembly instructions reference RENR5407-03. Also, replace the SMR seal, the bolts, the dowels, the gear coupling, the cones and cups and use the new shims. Do not reassemble the old parts.
Note: All the stock of 1994553 Housing Motors at Grimbergen has been cleaned out and only housing motor with improved material are available.
Note: Refer to the TIBU3367 published on June 2001 before installing the SMR seal (requires the application of the 2005937 Lubricant before installation).

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated July 8, 2004 when scheduling this service.
