SUBJECT: The Torque Converter Stator Clutch Should Be Removed After A Failure

PROBLEM: The optional lockup clutch torque converter that is used in the 988G machines includes a stator clutch. This one-way clutch allows the stator to rotate under certain conditions, which improves converter efficiency during some operating conditions. There have been some reports of failures of this stator clutch. In some cases, a stator clutch failure may cause damage to the impeller clutch. Symptoms associated with a stator clutch failure include, lack of power especially when digging, overheating, and excessive engine lug.
Note: The stator clutch is only installed in lockup clutch torque converters. The 126-5482 torque converter group has a serial number prefix of 5ZT. It is part of the 126-5483 TC GP-W/HSG, which is part of the 145-4225 CONV AR.
SOLUTION: When repairing a torque converter after a stator clutch failure, the stator clutch should be replaced with a solid hub. In order to do this, the following parts must be removed from the torque converter:
1T-0680 Springs 1T-1410 Rollers 1T-1423 Cam 1T-1910 Plates 9U-9100 Race
The following parts should be installed:
1T-0787 Plates (2 pieces) 133-6589 Adapter (stator) (1 piece)
For assembly procedures, refer to the parts listing and the Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3096, "Torque Converter ? Assemble", for the non-lockup clutch torque converter (128-5302 TC GP).
For identification purposes, stamp the letters "TCR" on the serial number plate directly below the arrangement number. The serial number plate is located on the top of the 132-4454 Housing As.
This change also requires new power train software. The new power train software is currently under development and will be available shortly. The new power train software will be announced in a Service Magazine article when it becomes available. Any machine that has had the stator clutch remove should install the production software once it is available.
