Use a suitable hoist to position head assembly (5) on rod assembly (7).Note: Before the installation of head assembly (5), align the bolt pattern in head assembly (5) with the bolt pattern in cylinder assembly (7).
Use a plastic hammer to install head assembly (5) onto rod assembly (7).

Install ball (9), plate (11), and wear ring (10) on rod assembly (7).Note: Wear ring (10) temporarily retains ball (9) and plate (11) until rod assembly (7) is installed in cylinder assembly (8).

Install two plastic plugs to prevent foreign material from entering the grease passages during the assembly procedure. Remove the plastic plug when the grease fittings are installed.

Use Tool (A) to install retaining ring (16) on the side of rod assembly (7) that is not chamfered.

Install bearing (17) into rod assembly (7).
Illustration 20 g00465000Note: Spray WD-40 into the bores before the installation of the bearings.Note: Place bearing (17) in a freezer at −50 °C (−58 °F) for at least two hours before you begin the assembly procedure.
Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.
Note: The orientation of bearing (17) in cylinder assembly (8) is important. During the installation of the bearing, lead with the open side of bearing (17). The flats on the open side of the outer bearing race should be perpendicular to the cylinder stroke.

Align fifteen bolts (6) and the nineteen washers on head assembly (5).

Use 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease to lubricate bearing (17) on rod assembly (7).

Align rod assembly (7) and cylinder assembly (8).Note: Before you install bolts (6), align the bolt pattern in cylinder assembly (8) with the bolt pattern in head assembly (5).

Install fifteen bolts (6) and the nineteen washers to head assembly (5). Use Tool (C) to tighten fifteen bolts (6) to a torque of 215 40 N m (158.6 29.5 lb ft).

Use two bolts (2) and two washers to install O-ring seal (4) and cover assembly (3). Use Tool (C) to tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 215 40 N m (158.6 29.5 lb ft).
Repeat Step 25 for the remaining cover assembly that is on the opposite side of the cylinder assembly.End By:
Install the rear suspension cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rear Suspension (Cylinder) - Install" for the correct procedure.
Install the pressure sensor of VIMS for the right suspension cylinder.
