Introduction
The following procedure is used in order to apply dielectric grease to the contact ring while the column is mounted in the machine.Note: These instructions must be read and understood before starting the following procedure in order to ensure that the correct equipment (tools, spare parts, etc) is available in order to effectively apply the dielectric grease and testing the column without damaging the column.

Steering Column
Telescope the column outward toward the driver.
Lower the steering column and remove the Upper Cover by grasping the cover at the bottom closest to the dash.
Raise the steering column and remove the lower cover by grasping the cover at the bottom closest to the dash.Note: If you have a self-cancelling turn signal switch with the hazard button sticking through the lower cover, remove the cover slowly and carefully so that not to damage the hazard button.
Start the engine so that the steering wheel can be turned freely as the grease is applied to the contacts.
Locate the Contact Ring(s).
Illustration 2 g01963057
(A) Coat the brass ring with grease.
Use a soft brush in order to apply the grease liberally to the brass contact ring completely, but not so much that the grease will drip while turning the Steering Wheel slowly.Note: If the vehicle is equipped with the smart wheel cruise control, then repeat Step 6 for the other contact ring.
Raise the steering column and reinstall the lower cover.
Lower the steering column and reinstall the upper cover.Procedure That is Needed to Verify That the Horn Works Correctly
Press the city horn button in order to ensure that the horn works.
Repeat Step 1 at the extreme tilt positions. Also, perform the check with the steering wheel in the following positions: fully left, fully right and lock to lock.Steering Columns that have the Smart Wheel style Cruise Control
If the machine that the grease kit is being performed on has the smart wheel style cruise control, the horn must be tested according to the following specifications:
Verify that the cruise and horn brush static resistance and noise are within acceptable limits for use with the VIP Multiplex (Cruise Control/Smart Wheel) System.
Verify that the proper Polarity and Continuity has been observed during wiring of the Steering Column and Cruise Control (Smart Wheel).Note: When performing the above tests, telescope the steering column all the way outward toward the driver. Also, perform these tests at the extreme tilt angles with the steering column tilted all the way up and all the way down.Note: The above tests MUST be performed. If the cruise control is on, any loss of continuity will immediately turn off the cruise control. This sudden slowing of the machine could cause a SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
