If the part number can not be seen on the top of the shank or if the part number is not in the chart, measure the shank. The correct type of shank can be found by making a comparison of these measurements with the dimensions on the illustrations. The part number of the shank assembly is on the top of the shank or on the eye as shown.(1) For 24 hours before making the installation, keep the shank and the new adapter in a room or in an oven where the temperature is at least 24°C (75°F). This will get the material in the center of the shank to a temperature of 21°C (70°F). (2) If the shank is cut off to the dimensions on pages 2, 3 and 4, the ripping angle (E) of the new adapter will be approximately the same as the original shank. The chart above shows the ripping angles for different values of dimension (F), which is the difference between the front and rear cutoff points of the shanks given on pages 2, 3 and 4. Do not use the chart for the ripping angle of shanks for hinge type rippers. Make mark (G) according to the dimensions on pages 2, 3 and 4; make any desired changes for a different ripping angle. Make mark (H) parallel with and 10 (.38") lower than mark (G).(3) Heat the area around marks (G) and (H) until it is at least 149°C (300°F). Cut the shank across mark (H). This will heat the shank evenly in the area of mark (G) and will keep the shank from getting small cracks. Cut the shank across mark (G) and remove all slag from the shank. (4) Using a clamp, fasten the new adapter assembly to the shank. Make adjustments to the position of the adapter until the front edge of the adapter is even with the front edge of the shank. Heat both pieces to 149°C (300°F) at least 76 (3.0") on both sides of the junction of the two pieces.(5) Make the first welds with an AWS E110-18, 5Ø (.19"Ø) electrode. Start the first weld (pass) (and all other passes) at the outer edge of the shank and stop at the center of the shank. Be sure that all passes go around the outer edges of the shank. This will prevent any gaps in the weld near the edges of the shank. Always remove all slag after each pass.(6) Make a second pass over the first pass. Turn the shank over and grind through the junction until the base of the first pass can be seen. Be sure the temperature of the welded area is at 149°C to 232°C (300°F to 450°F) during this time.(7) Make two passes on this side, then make a third pass on the first side.
The temperature of the welded area must not become more than 232°C
