Service Brake Holding Ability Test
Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing. If the machine begins to move during test, reduce the engine speed immediately and engage the parking brake.
Make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and of obstacles.Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.Fasten the seat belt before you test the brakes. The service brake holding ability test determines whether the service brake is functional. This test is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort.
Start the engine and apply the service brake pedal. The service brake indicator should illuminate. The brake system pressure will reach 13780 690 kPa (2000 100 psi) for the front brake system and the brake system pressure will reach 13260 690 kPa (1925 100 psi) for the rear brake system.
Raise the bowl.
Release the service brake pedal. The brake system pressure will reach 100 kPa (15 psi) after the service brake pedal is released.
If the machine moved while testing the brakes, contact your Caterpillar Dealer. Have the dealer inspect and, if necessary, repair the service brakes before returning the machine to operation.
Note: If the friction material for the brakes needs to be replaced, the new friction material may require burnishing for maximum performance. Consult your Caterpillar Dealer or see Special Instruction, SEHS9580 for the procedure for burnishing.Parking And Secondary Brake Holding Ability Test
Make sure that no people or obstacles are in the area around the machine.Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.Fasten the seat belt before you test the brakes. This test determines whether the parking brake is functional. This test is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort.
Start the engine.
Apply the parking brake. The pressure at the front axle will reach 3500 345 kPa (500 50 psi).
Raise the bowl.
While the engine is at an idle and the parking brake is applied, move the transmission control to the SECOND SPEED position.
If the machine begins to move, reduce the engine speed immediately and engage the parking brake.
Gradually increase the engine rpm. The parking brake should prevent machine movement when the engine is running at 1000 100 rpm.If the machine moves with the engine rpm less than 1000 rpm, consult your Caterpillar Dealer for an inspection of the machine.
Reduce the engine speed and move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position. Lower the bowl to the ground and stop the engine.
Release the parking brake.
Consult your Caterpillar Dealer or see Special Instruction, SEHS9187 for the procedure for burnishing.
