Schematic of the Can Data Link CircuitA CID 0588 is associated with malfunctions in the Monitoring System Display communications over the S A E 1939 Datalink (CAN). An FMI 09 indicates the machine ECM receives erratic, intermittent, or incorrect data from the Monitoring System ECM over the CAN Datalink. The machine ECM cannot communicate with the Monitoring System ECM, or the communications between the two ECMs appear to work intermittently. Probable causes for the diagnostic are:
Incorrect software, or hardware, Part Numbers.
Poor machine harness electrical connections.r
A J1939 Datalink circuit shorted to ground.
A J1939 Datalink circuit shorted to +Battery.
Open J1939 Datalink circuit.Note: Poor connections often cause problems in electrical circuits. Before performing this procedure, inspect all of the harness connectors involved in the circuit. Verify that all circuit connections are clean, secure, and in good condition. If a problem is found with any of the connections: correct the problem, and verify that diagnostic code CID 0588 FMI 09 is still active, before performing the following procedures. Note: Check for other data communications-related diagnostic codes first. If any are found, repair those codes first, prior to continuing with this procedure.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes now, but clear those codes after the original diagnostic code has been corrected. System Response:Select display features may not function properly.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS.
Verify that the following information is correct:
Machine ECM software part number.
Monitoring System ECM software part number.
Machine ECM part number.
Monitoring System ECM part number.Note: Consult the Business Unit that produces the product for the correct part numbers of the configuration software. Expected Result:All part numbers are correct. Results:
YES - All part numbers are correct. Go to test step 2.
NO - All part numbers are NOT correct. The part number of the Machine ECM may be incorrect. The part number of the Monitoring System ECM may be incorrect. The incorrect software for the ECM may also be installed. Repair: Replace the incorrect ECM with an ECM that has the correct part number. Flash the correct and most current software. See Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program". Verify that CID 0588 FMI 09 is no longer active, and return the machine to normal operations. If CID 0588 FMI 09 is still active, go to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.
Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Inspect all harness connections that are related to the Can Data Link. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.
Check the connectors for proper mating.
Check the wires at the connector.
Check each wire for nicks or signs of abrasion in the insulation.
Check for moisture at the connector.
Check the connectors for dirty contacts or corroded contacts.
Check each pin and each socket of the machine harness connectors. Expected Result:The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Results:
YES - The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Go to test step 4.
NO - The machine harness connectors
