Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Axle Suspension Pump and Oil Lines for the Axle Suspension Pump (1) Pump outlet line (2) Axle suspension pump (3) Drain oil line (4) Supply oil lineSome of the oil from the pistons in the axle suspension pump does not flow through pump outlet line (1) into the axle suspension system. The pump oil that does not flow into the axle suspension system flows into the pump body for lubrication for the parts that move. This oil is leakage. The oil flows through drain oil line (3) for the pump and back to the hydraulic tank.The amount of oil leakage through oil line (3) is an indication of the condition of the pump.
Make sure that the oil level in the hydraulic tank is at the full mark on the gauge.
Start the engine. Run the engine until the hydraulic oil reaches normal operating temperature.
Make sure that the axle suspension is off. Stop the engine.Note: Keep the end of disconnected oil line (3) above the level of the axle suspension pump. Oil must not drain from the pump body when the engine is stopped. Use an approved container in order to contain any oil that flows from the hydraulic tank.
Disconnect oil line (3) from the hydraulic tank. Place the end of the oil line into a large approved container in order to contain any oil that drains from the oil line.
Install Tool (A) into the open port in the hydraulic tank.
Start the engine. Operate the engine at high idle. Turn on the suspension ride. Leave the suspension ride on for the next step.
Approximately 5 seconds after you turn on the suspension ride, move oil line (3) into another large empty approved container for 30 seconds. Next, return the oil line to the original container.
Turn off the suspension ride. Stop the engine.
Measure the volume of the leakage oil that flowed into the approved container in 30 seconds. If the volume significantly exceeds 4.2 L (4.44 qt) the pump has worn parts.
Remove Tool (A) from the hydraulic tank. Connect oil line (3) to the open port in the hydraulic tank. Fill the hydraulic tank with oil before the engine is started.
