Perform the following procedure as part of the Walk-Around inspection:
Clean the quick coupler and the work tool.
Install the work tool on the quick coupler. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operating Techniques".

If the top tube has developed flat surfaces in the contact area, the top tube must be repaired. Refer to illustration 2.
If the hooks of the work tool are worn, the hooks of the work tool must be replaced. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for information on replacing the hooks on the work tool.Repairing the Mounting Pin
Personal injury or death can result from fumes, gases and ultraviolet rays from the weld arc.Welding can cause fumes, burn skin and produce ultraviolet rays.Keep your head out of the fumes. Use ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing area. Wear eye, ear and body protection before working.Protect yourself and others; read and understand this warning. Fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health. Personal injury or death can result from sudden work tool movement.Sudden movement of the work tool can cause injury to persons near the work tool.To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the work tool is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the work tool.

Measure the diameter of the top tube in an area with no wear. Record the measurement. Refer to illustration 3.
Cover the hydraulic lines and the cylinder with a welding blanket.
Grind the surface of the top tube that is to be welded. The surface should be clean and free of paint and rust.
Prepare the quick coupler and the host machine for welding. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Welding on Machines and Engines with Electronic Controls".

Example of welding patternThe top tube may require a repair weld on the other side. See the arrow.
Use welding material according to "AWS5.18 RE70S-6 (DIN8559 SG-2)" in order to weld the surface of the top tube. Refer to illustration 4.Note: Weld only in axial direction. The beads of weld must be positioned in such a way that the original circular shape of the top tube is restored. The beads of weld must be thick enough in order to allow you to grind the weld flush to the original diameter of the top tube.
Remove all debris from the weld and from
