Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

Install spring backup plate (1) in the cartridge assembly.
Place springs (2) and spring spacer (3) on a clean work surface. Apply a liberal amount of 6V-2055 Grease to one end and on one side of each spring.
Arrange springs (2) evenly around spring spacer (3). The proper order is two springs and a space. The grease will hold the springs to the spring spacer.

Install springs (2) and spring spacer (3) in the cartridge assembly. The grease will hold the components in position on the spring backup plate.

Inspect O-ring seal (8) for wear or for damage. Replace the O-ring seal, if necessary. Install O-ring seal (8) on brake retainer (9). Install the seal (7) on brake retainer (9). The spring in seal (7) must be installed toward the external teeth.

Place brake retainer (9) on a clean work surface. Position the brake retainer with the external gear downward. Install brake discs (5) and friction discs (6). Begin with brake disc (5) and then install friction disc (6). Alternate discs until all discs are installed.
Install brake piston (4). Carefully slide the motor coupling into the assembled brake components in order to align the discs and plates. Remove the motor coupling.

Install the assembled brake components into the cartridge assembly. Carefully slide the motor coupling into the assembled components.
Use Tooling (B) to slide retaining ring (10) against brake retainer (9) .

Install Tooling (A) in order to compress the brake springs so that retaining ring 10 can be installed. For this Step, center Tooling (A) across the cartridge assembly.
Use Tooling (B ) to compress the retaining ring (10). Use a screwdriver or a punch to move retaining ring (10) into the groove.
Release the pressure on the brake springs and remove Tooling (A) .

If the motor coupling (12) and retaining ring (11) rest at an angle, use a screwdriver to center the motor coupling. This helps align the discs.End By: Install the planetary carrier assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Planet Carrier Assembly - Assemble".
