Secondary Fuel Filter
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide"for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations.
Note: Replace the secondary filter in an area that has no airborne dust or dirt. Do not expose new filters to surfaces that are not clean.Note: Before you replace the secondary fuel filter, the primary fuel filter must be replaced. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Filter and Water Separator Element - Replace" for more information.
Park the machine on a level surface. Ensure that the parking brake is fully engaged.
Lift the engine hood.

Use a strap wrench and remove the secondary fuel filter. Discard the secondary fuel filter properly.
Do not fill the secondary and tertiary fuel filters with fuel before installing. The fuel would not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Clean the fuel filter base.
Coat the seal for the new secondary fuel filter with a clean diesel fuel prior to installation.
Install the new secondary fuel filter by hand.Note: Installation instructions for the filter are printed on the side of each Caterpillar filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.
Start the engine and check for leaks.
