The converter muffler hangerclamps used to attach the catalytic converter muffler (CCM) to the chassison your Ford Super Duty equipped with a Caterpillar 3126E engine may crackand / or break along a weld bead used to hold the converter muffler canassembly stationary to the clamps. If both straps fail completely, thepotential exists that the converter muffler assembly may come loose andseparate from the truck. You will not be charged for the service performed.Contact your local Authorized Ford TEPS (TruckEngine Product Support) dealer or any Authorized Caterpillar dealer immediatelyto schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time requiredto complete this service. Rework Procedure
The proposed field service should be ableto be completed without removing the converter muffler from the vehicle.The overall process will be to remove the band furthest from the inlet,replace it with a new band assembly, and repeat with the second band.Band removal
Cut the band with a grinding wheel at the overlapof the band on the bottom side of the muffler. Cutting the band at theoverlap will reduce the potential of damaging the muffler body.

Remove the band completely from the muffler bygrinding away the weld between the band and the muffler body. Make surethat care is taken not to damage the outer muffler body while removingthis weld.

Remove the band and clip from the muffler by removingthe bolt holding the isolator assembly to the clip.
Installing new band assembly
Slide the new band assembly into place and reinstallthe bolt that holds the isolator to the clip.

Orient the new band assembly so the bolt-togetherjoint is on the bottom side of the muffler opposite the clip and isolator.Hand-assemble the 5/16-18 bolt and nut provided to temporarily hold thenew band assembly in place. Torque the bolt holding the rubber isolatorto the clip to 30-40 ft-lb. Torque the bolt holding the band assembly togetherto 14-18 ft-lb. The band assembly should come together fully, but not bedeformed excessively.

Repeat steps for the band nearest the inlet ofthe muffler.

Rework Procedure
