Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove".
Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.Note: For easier assembly, mark all hose assemblies, tube assemblies, wire harnesses and cables for identification purposes.

Place suitable cribbing between the axle and the frame. This prevents the axle from tilting when the final drive is removed.

Disconnect tube assembly (1) from the spindle. Disconnect tube assembly (2) from the brake housing.

Remove hydraulic fitting (3) and the O-ring seal from the spindle.

Disconnect tube assembly (4) from the spindle.

Position a suitable lift truck under the final drive, as shown. Attach the lift truck to the final drive with suitable chains.

Remove 41 bolts (5) and the washers that secure the final drive to the axle housing. Remove the final drive and the O-ring seal from the axle housing. The weight of the final drive is approximately 5634 kg (12420 lb).
