Component Code(s) 7620, 1356, 1901SUBJECT: 953C AND 963C MACHINES OVERHEAT WITH DEMAND FAN
PROBLEM:
During the introduction of the March 2005 updates on the 953C and 963C a late software change in the engine and demand fan management software has created a concern on the cooling capability of the machines. The fan control is forced to minimum speed during machine turns and thus could lead to overheating of the systems. The risk of engine failure is minimal, as the engine ECM will derate the power as soon as the coolant temperature exceeds 108?C. Some TTL applications, particularly truck loading, are at high risk for overheating. Any application in which the operator uses the pedals to turn the machine frequently is at risk.
SOLUTION:
Enter Cat ET Configuration screen. Toggle the Engine Fan Control to "Off". If the Engine Fan Control feature is not available in Cat ET, disable the system by unplugging the fan drive solenoid. This may result in one of two active diagnostic codes, 291-12 for fan solenoid malfunction, or 544-08 for abnormal fan solenoid signal. The fan will run full speed all of the time, eliminating the overheating condition. A permanent fix is being tested and will be on new production machines soon. Machines already shipped to dealers or customers will be reworked with a before failure product support program once the fix is available.
