There are two versions of the 7G-2608 Torque Converter Center Shaft. The difference is the journal that holds the bearing on the shaft. One shaft has rolled splines and the other type has hobbed splines. Use of the 229-8597 Ball Bearing on shaft assemblies with rolled splines is unrestricted. Shafts with the hobbed splines must be inspected before using the 229-8597 Ball Bearing .If 7G-2608 Torque Converter Center Shaft fails the inspection, there are three options:
It may be possible to rework the shaft.
Replacement of the 7G-2608 Torque Converter Center Shaft
Rebuild the torque converter with a 1F-2771 Ball Bearing .Shaft Inspection/Salvage
Any used 7G-2608 Torque Converter Center Shaft should be inspected before using the 229-8597 Ball Bearing.

The bearing journal must have at least 27 mm (1.0630 inch) over two-thirds of the diameter. The length is measured from the shoulder on the shaft to the tips between the splines.Note: New shafts in the parts system may have rolled splines or hobbed splines. New shafts in the parts system with hobbed splines have the acceptable length of the bearing journal. These shafts do not need to be inspected.If the length of the bearing journal is less than 27 mm (1.063 inch), 1.5 mm (0.059 inch) can be removed from the shoulder of the shaft. Use a slight undercut and maintain the radius at the base of the shoulder. The same amount of material must be removed from the end of the shaft. The distance from the shoulder to the end of the shaft must be maintained. Break the sharp corner on the shoulder and lightly chamfer the end of the shaft. The shoulder is hardened. The end of the shaft may be soft or hardened.Note: When any material is removed from the end of the shaft, the threads at the end of the shaft should be checked in order to ensure that the bolt does not bottom out.

In order to maximize the life of the bearing, inspect the following.
Verify that the splines on the transmission input yoke are in good condition. Also, verify that the yoke will slide onto the transmission input spines.
Verify that the drive shaft that is between the transmission and the torque converter output shaft is properly balanced.
Verify that the engine mounts and transmission mounts are in good condition. Also, verify that the mounts do not allow excessive movement under a load.
Verify correct alignment between the engine and the transmission.Assembly Procedure With The 229-8597 Ball Bearing
The assembly procedure for the 229-8597 Ball Bearing is different from the 1F-2771 Ball Bearing. The following steps show the installation procedure for the 229-8597 Ball Bearing.

Install the lip seal in the bearing carrier. The lip of the seal should be facing the inside of the bearing carrier. The edge of the seal should make contact with the counterbore in the bearing carrier.
