Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
Illustration 1 g02029109
Fourteen 7W-5426 Camshaft As gears are missing a machining operation. The fourteen camshaft assemblies are believed to have been shipped between D01M09Y09P47 and D31M10Y09P47. Refer to the example of the date code packaging label in Illustration1. Camshaft gears with the casting code of G7W-4070 may not have the required machining on the back side of the gear. The lack of machining causes interference between the timing gear and the bolts on the timing plate. The results are a scraping noise, damage to the bolts and damage to the camshaft gear.Solution
Illustration 2 g02029088
The front side of the camshaft gear (1) suspected of lacking the essential machining process.
Illustration 3 g02029106
The ledge (2) indicates the lack of machining on the back side of the camshaft gear.
Illustration 4 g02029112
The front of the camshaft gear (1) after the timing cover is removed.
Illustration 5 g02029116
(3) Mirror (4) Flashlight
Illustration 6 g02029117
Rear of the camshaft gear (1) with machined radius (5)
Illustration 7 g02029119
Observer's view by mirror (3) of the clearance between the bolt head and the machined radius (5) All 7W-5426 Camshaft As gears that are marked G7W-4070 must be inspected on the back side of the gear in order to determine if the radius has been machined. Refer to Illustration 2 and Illustration 3. The timing cover must be removed in order to identify the casting code. Refer to Illustration 4.If machining has not been performed, then the camshaft assembly must be removed from the engine and replaced with another camshaft assembly. If the rear of the gear has the machined radius, reassemble the timing cover. The engine may then be run. Refer to Illustrations 5, 6 and 7.
Illustration 8 g02029113
Front of camshaft gear (1) without the problem
Illustration 9 g02029114
Rear of the camshaft gear that has the machined radius If the casting code on the gear is 7W-4070, then the timing cover can be reassembled and the engine may be run. Refer to Illustration 8 and Illustration 9.
