Installation Procedure
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Verify that all of the components of the final drive are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.Note: Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary.Note: Lubricate all of the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

Position a suitable lift truck under the final drive. Attach the lift truck to the final drive with suitable chains. Install the final drive and the O-ring seal to the axle housing. The weight of the axle housing is 5634 kg (12420 lb).

The bolts should not be reused after the bolts have been tightened to the recommended torque and then turned by an additional amount.
Install 41 new bolts (5) and the washers that secure the final drive to the axle housing. Tighten the bolts in an alternating sequence to a torque of 1400 175 N m (1032 130 lb ft). Turn the bolts by an additional 120 5 degrees after the bolts have been torqued.

Connect tube assembly (4) to the spindle.

Install hydraulic fitting (3) and the O-ring seal to the spindle.

Connect tube assembly (2) to the brake housing. Connect tube assembly (1) to the spindle.

Remove the cribbing between the axle and the frame.End By:
Install the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove and Install".
Install the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Install".
