Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

A 169-8373 Fluid Sampling Bottle 1 If the oil becomes contaminated, premature component failure could result. Contaminated oil can also contribute to overheating.Use the following procedure to determine the contamination of the oil in the hydraulic system.
Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface.

Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.
Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.
Place the engine in ECO mode or low idle.

Select "Main Menu" (3) on the machine display.
Select "Machine Setup" (4).

Select "Engine Spd Sw" (5).

Select "ECO" (6) or "Low" (7).

Unlock latch (8) and open engine compartment door (9) on the right side of the machine.

Remove cap from S O S tap (10). Obtain oil sample with Tool (A).

Move engine start switch (11) to the OFF position.

Remove and check hydraulic filter element (12) for foreign materials.
Shiny steel particles indicate a pump failure or pump deterioration. Shiny steel particles can also indicate a motor failure or motor deterioration.
Rubber particles indicate seal failures or hose failures.
Bronze colored particles indicate pump or motor piston slipper failure or port plate wear.
Aluminum particles indicate a fan motor failure or a charge/steering pump failure or wear.Note: If any of these particles are found in the hydraulic filter element, all components of the hydraulic oil system must be cleaned. Do not use any damaged parts. Any damaged parts must be removed, and new parts must be installed.
Replace hydraulic filter element (12).
Close the engine compartment door.
