Timing Gear Cover
START BY:a) remove automatic timing advanceb) remove water pumpc) remove sea water pump (if so equipped)d) remove vibration dampere) remove engine front support 1. Remove two bolts (1) and bonnet (2). 2. Remove six bolts (3) that hold the oil pan to the timing gear cover. Loosen the rest of the bolts that hold the oil pan to the cylinder block and flywheel housing. 3. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the front of the engine as shown. 4. Use tool (A) and a hoist to lift the front of the engine enough so that a 1/2" hardened washer (4) can be installed between the oil pan and the cylinder block on both sides of the engine. Lower the engine down on to the blocks under the oil pan. The weight of the front end of the engine is approximately 1134 kg (2500 lb.). 5. Remove the bolts and timing gear cover (5). 6. Remove timing gear cover gasket (6) if a replacement is necessary.Install Timing Gear Cover
1. Make sure O-ring seal (1) is in position on the front of the fuel injection pump housing. Put clean engine oil on the seal.2. Put gasket (2) in position. 3. Install timing gear cover (3) and the bolts that hold it in place. If a new gasket was installed, cut the bottom of the gasket even with surface (4) after the timing gear cover is installed on the engine. 4. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the front of the engine as shown. 5. Use tool (A) and the hoist to lift the front of the engine enough so that 1/2" hardened washers (5) can be removed. Lower the engine down on to the blocks.6. Tighten the bolts that hold the oil pan to the cylinder block and flywheel housing. Install the six bolts that hold the oil pan to the front timing gear cover. 7. Put clean engine oil or glycerine on the seal on bonnet (6). Install bonnet (6) on the engine oil cooler. Make sure the gasket is in position between bonnet (6) and elbow (8).8. Install bolt (10).
