Cycles per Minute definition: Each air discharge or stroke of the air operated filter pump is considered one cycle (delivery of one pulse of oil). The internal pump shaft will slide left (one cycle), and then to the right (one cycle), delivering oil going both directions. Another way of determining one cycle is to listen for the TUK - CHUK (2 pulses). Count the number of cycles in one minute for use in the equation in Illustration 14.Example: The oil capacity being filtered is 428 L (113 US gal) of 10W oil. The filter unit is operating at 90 cycles per minute. The approximate filtration time should be 175 minutes or 2.9 hours.Maintenance
Filter Element
The filter cart comes standard with a 10 micron filter element. This filter should work in most filtering applications. If necessary, optional 3, 5, and 25 micron filter elements are also available. If the filter is being changed too frequently in a filtering application, a larger micron filter can be installed to first remove all the larger contamination particles. The 194-2897 Filter Cart "dirty filter" indicator is a simple device. Behind the sight glass is a white steel plate approximately 25 mm (1.0 inch) wide. It is attached to a structure that moves downward as the pressure difference increases between the incoming and outgoing oil. If the steel plate drops downward in the window, it means the filter is becoming clogged.

The arrow in Illustration 17 points to the Dirty Filter Indicator. To determine if the filter is becoming clogged during a filtering operation, first view the "dirty filter" indicator with the air supply shut off, then watch the indicator while turning one the air flow. If the filter is clogging the white steel plate will drop.Note: The 194-2897 Filter Cart Group has an internal 170 kPa (25 psi) pressure relief valve. The 246-1157 Filter Cart Group has no bypass. The 246-1157 Filter Cart Group has a 218-8445 Differential Pressure Gauge (6) "dirty filter indicator" to indicate when the filter element should be changed. A pressure of 414 kPa (60 psi) indicates a dirty filter that requires changing.

(6) Dirty Filter IndicatorA ball valve at the bottom of the filter housing is used to drain oil from the filter housing, when changing the filter elements. A hose can be attached to the valve to empty the oil into a suitable container.

Drain Valve For Oil Filter Housing. The 246-1157 Filter Cart uses a standard filter element which can filter 2271 L (600 US gal). The large capacity of the filter extends time between filter element changes.Air Pump Muffler
In some cases, the air pump muffler (7) can freeze. If the air pump is not functioning properly, first check the muffler to make sure that it is not clogged or frozen with condensation. For the most efficient operation of the filter cart, replace the muffler periodically.
