preparatory steps: a) remove turbochargerb) remove cross brace 1. Remove exhaust elbow (1) from front of engine. 2. Remove exhaust pipe (2).3. Disconnect electrical wire to fuel pressure switch (9).4. Remove remaining electrical bracket and switch from fuel filter housing.5. Remove clips and wires from fuel filter housing. 6. Disconnect lines (3), (4), (5), (7), and (8) from fuel filter housing.7. Remove bracket retaining bolts (6). 8. Remove housing, fuel filters, and mounting bracket. 9. Disconnect crankcase breather tube (10) and tachometer drive (11). 10. Remove valve covers (12) (Both sides), lifting eye (13), (Left side only), camshaft phasing gear covers (14) (Right hand cover is at rear of engine). 11. Position No. 1 cylinder in Top Center (TC) firing position and install timing pins (15) in camshafts. 12. Install fuel injection pump timing pin (16). 13. Remove exhaust elbow (17) from frame.14. Remove exhaust elbows (22) and (23) from manifolds.15. Remove eight fuel injection lines (19) from pump to camshaft housings. Remove eight fuel injection lines (21) from camshaft housings to precombustion chambers. Cap all openings.16. Disconnect glow plug leads from plugs and glow plugs wires (20) from cam housing.17. Remove cmashaft housing retaining bolts (18). 18. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts and remove camshafts and housings-weight 115 lbs. (52,2 kg).19. Remove camshaft retaining plates. 20. Align camshaft phasing gears. Slide shafts from gears, and remove shafts from housing.Install Camshafts
1. Install camshafts into housings.2. Align timing marks on camshaft phasing gears and secure gears to shafts.3. Install camshaft retaining plates and timing pin. Check to be sure that the crankshaft is at (TC) compression position for No. 1 piston. The crankshaft will also be in this position if:(a) The timing pin can be inserted into slot in fuel injection pump camshaft as outlined in FUEL INJECTION PUMP CAMSHAFT TIMING in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.(b) The timing pin for the right camshaft housing will drop into timing slot in right inlet camshaft (if the housing has not been disturbed).
If above procedure relating to valve lash, camshaft timing marks, and crankshaft position is not followed, damage to the engine can result.
4. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts in camshaft housings and install on engine using tool (A). 5. Tighten housing retaining bolts and install camshaft gear covers (14).6. Install left front lifting eye (13). 7. Install fuel lines (19) and (21) and tighten nuts to 30 5 lb. ft. (4,1 0,7 mkg).8. Connect glow plug wires (20).9. Install left and right exhaust elbows (23) and (22).10. Adjust valve lash to provide .026 in. (0,66 mm) exhaust and .012 in. (0,30 mm) intake clearance.11. Install valve covers. 12. Connect breather tube (10) and tachometer drive (11). 13. Install rear exhaust elbow, exhaust pipe, and front elbow (1). Don't tighten front elbow. 14.
