With engine above low idle, the oil pressure indicator should go off within 15 seconds. If not, stop the engine immediately and investigate.
1. Keep the engine at low idle until the oil pressure indicator goes off.2. Operate the engine at low idle for five minutes. Do not engage any controls during this time.3. The low air pressure alarm will sound until the service brake/retarder air reservoirs are charged to approximately 1/2 maximum operating pressure.If alarm is sounding and air pressure is good, the coolant flow alarm is sounding. Stop the engine immediately and check coolant level. 4. The alternator indicator (1) should be off. If it stays on after engine is running, stop the engine and investigate.5. If the transmission filter service indicator (2) is on continuously, stop the engine and service the transmission and torque converter filters. 6. If the supplemental steering motor indicator is on, move the switch to AUTO. The switch should always be in the AUTO position during normal operation.To provide maximum sound suppression on machines equipped with sound suppressed cabs, keep all doors and windows closed.Check the engine oil, steering tank, transmission, hoist, converter and brake oil levels with the engine at low idle and the oil at normal operating temperature. See the "Maintenance Section" for information on checking the oil levels for proper fill levels. 8. Check the engine crankcase oil level. Maintain the oil level between the LOW IDLE marks on the ENGINE RUNNING side of the dipstick. 9. Observe all gauges, warning and service lights frequently during operation. All gauges should indicate in the green range and all warning and service indicators should be off.Testing the Secondary Brake System
Test operation of secondary brake system daily, or at the beginning of each shift.
This is a test to determine if secondary brake system is functional. This test is not intended to measure maximum brake holding effort. Brake holding effort required to hold a machine at a specific engine rpm will vary from machine to machine due to differences in engine setting, power train efficiency, etc., as well as differences in brake holding ability.Engine rpm at beginning of machine movement, with secondary brake applied, should be compared against the engine rpm your specific machine was able to hold on a prior test.1. Start the engine and allow the air system pressure to build-up to maximum operating pressure. 2. Apply the secondary brake.3. Move the transmission shift lever to 1st range forward.4. Release the parking brake.5. Accelerate the engine to 1200 rpm.6. The machine should not move forward.7. Stop the engine.
Personal injury could result from the sudden stop of the machine. The secondary brake will automatically engage when brake air pressure drops below safe operating pressure.
8. If the secondary brake does not function properly, contact your Caterpillar dealer for inspection of the secondary brake system. Have necessary repairs made.
