Note: Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) is a software program that can be used on an IBM compatible personal computer. In order to use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET), order the following materials: Special Publication, JERD2124, "ET Single Use Program License", Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet", 7X-1425 Data Link Cable and the Data Subscription and Special Publication, JERD2142, "Data Subscription". The Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet" lists the required hardware and the features of the Cat ET.The Cat ET is not required in order to determine the diagnostic codes and the Cat ET is not required in order to clear the diagnostic codes. However, the process of determining the diagnostic codes is easier and faster by using the Cat ET. The Cat ET can also display information on the history of a diagnostic code and the parameter status of diagnostic codes. These features allow the Cat ET to be a useful tool for troubleshooting.

Compartment behind the Front Access Door (385C) (6) Front Access Door (7) Fuse Panel (8) Connector for Cat ETThe Cat ET connects to the diagnostic connector (8) for the Cat ET and the Cat ET communicates with the electronic control modules over the Cat Data Link. The diagnostic connector (8) is located on the fuse panel (7) inside the compartment behind the cab (Front Access Door) (6). For more information and the locations of the connectors, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electrical Components and Connector Locations" and the Electrical System Schematic in your machine's Service Manual.Connect the Cat ET to the machine. Turn the key start switch to the RUN position. Start the Cat ET. The Cat ET will initiate communications with the electronic control modules on the machine. The Cat ET will list the available electronic control modules on the machine after communication has been established. Choose the menu item "Machine Electronic Control Module". Use the Cat ET in order to determine the diagnostic codes. Follow the troubleshooting procedures that correspond to the diagnostic codes. See Troubleshooting Procedures.Status Groups For Cat ETThe Cat ET uses status groups in order to display information about the status of the parameters. The status groups (1 through 8) for the Machine ECM are shown in the following illustrations.Note: The following examples are for version 2.4 of the Electronic Technician. Other versions may differ from the following examples.
