Typical exampleThere have been a number of isolated instances with issues with the fuel injection pump (2) and 352-3694 Solenoid (Cold Start Advance) (1), 300-3573 Solenoid , 335-5735 Solenoid (3) on C3.4 engines.These issues with the fuel injection pump can cause seized solenoids, excessive smoke, the engine to run rough, the engine to stall and engine performance issues.Solution
Check that correct maintenance of the fuel system has been carried out at the correct service intervals. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for more information and the correct procedures.Obtain a fuel sample from the fuel injection pump or the clean side of the fuel filter in the machine to help identify the cause of the problem. The fuel should be analyzed for cleanliness to "ISO 4406" standard.Note: The minimum fuel sample size should be 326 mL (11 oz).Upload the results of the fuel sample to SIMS. Ensure that the following data is included.

Percentage water contentElectrical components, for example, fuel injection pump solenoids, should not be pressure washed. High-pressure water can enter electrical components and cause problems.Refer to the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manual or Caterpillar Fluids Recommendations for more information.Caterpillar recommends that the cold start advance solenoid (1) and the stop solenoid (3) should be replaced. Follow steps 1 to 5 in order to replace the cold start advance solenoid and the stop solenoid.
Remove the wiring harness.
Remove cold start advance solenoid (1). Remove fuel stop solenoid (3) .
Install a replacement cold start advance solenoid. Install a replacement fuel stop solenoid.
Tighten the cold start advance solenoid to a torque of 25 N m (18 lb ft). Tighten the fuel stop solenoid to a torque of 22 N m (16 lb ft).
Install the wiring harness.The machine should then be tested to see if the machine performs at the required level. If the issue has been resolved, return the cold start advance solenoid and the fuel stop solenoid using the part return process.If the issue has not been resolved, replace the fuel injection pump (2). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for the correct procedure.Return any fuel injection pump that still exhibits the issue immediately after the cold start advance solenoid and the fuel stop solenoid have been replaced using the part return process.Do not return any fuel injection pump that has not had the cold start advance solenoid and the fuel stop solenoid replaced as part of the current repair, even if the parts have previously been replaced. Fuel injection pumps with this issue have already been analyzed to show that the issue is due to water ingress or debris ingress into the fuel injection pump through the fuel. Investigation of these fuel injection pumps will prevent the determination of any additional root causes that may exist.
