Be certain that all the parts of the metering pump are clean and there is no dirt and debris. Do not use cloth or paper towels to dry parts. Lint or other material can get into the hydraulic system. This can cause damage to the components. Replace any parts that have scratches or burns which could result in leaks.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the assembly procedure, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble.
Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary.
Lubricate all of the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Illustration 1 g00521697Note: Apply steering fluid to the outside of the spool before installation.
Install spool (18) into body assembly (19). Turn the spool until the pin is aligned perpendicular to the port faces.

Install lip seal (14) and O-ring seal (15) to retainer (13). Install two races (16), thrust bearing (17) and the retainer to the body assembly.

Use Tool (A) to install retaining ring (12).

Install steering column (11) to the body assembly with four bolts (10) and the washers.

Install drive (9) into the body assembly. Make sure that the groove in the drive is fully seated on the pin. Make sure that the pin is still aligned perpendicular to the port faces.
Install O-ring seal (8) to the body assembly.

Install gerotor (7) into housing (6).

Illustration 10 g00530258Note: Before you install the cap and the screws, make sure that the pin is aligned parallel to a parallel line through two valleys of the gerotor (section A-A).
Install cap (2), O-ring seal (3), O-ring seal (4), plate (5) and the gerotor assembly with seven twelve point bolts (1). Tighten seven twelve point bolts (1) evenly to a torque of 24 4 N m (17.7 3.0 lb ft). Tighten seven twelve point bolts (1) evenly to a final torque of 100 15 N m (73.8 11.0 lb ft). End By:
Install the steering metering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Metering Pump (Steering) - Remove and Install".
