Modification Procedure:
It may be necessary to remove some track shoes in the area of the modifications to obtain adequate work space.
Illustration 1. Location of stiffeners.1. Mark the locations for the three holes for the stiffeners on the outer side of both main frame rails. See Illustration 1.2. Use an air carbon arc torch or a similar tool to cut the six holes marked in Step 1. The holes must be large enough to insert a 50.0 3.0 mm (1.97 .12") diameter stiffener at each location.3. Identify each hole. Measure and record the distance from the inner plate to the outside of the outer plate at each hole.4. The length of each stiffener should be 6 mm (.24") less than the measurement recorded in Step 3. Cut a stiffener for each hole from 50.0 3.0 mm (1.97 .12") diameter SAE1018 steel. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. Dimensions for stiffeners.
Illustration 3. Dimensions for modification of side plate assemblies. Use E7018 electrode or an equivalent for welds.5. Insert each stiffener into its correct hole until it contacts the inner plate. Weld the stiffeners in place. See Illustration 2.6. With the side plate assemblies of the guard and hood group bolts in place, mark the location of the new mounting holes (four at the bottom of each side plate). Also mark the area to be removed from the bottom of the side plate assemblies. See Illustration 3.
Illustration 4. Location of collars.7. With the side plate assemblies still bolted in place, drill a pilot hole through the side plate and outer plate of the main frame assembly at each of the new mounting hole locations marked in Step 6.8. Remove the side plate assemblies. Use an air carbon arc torch or a similar tool to remove the area (marked in Step 6) from the bottom of the side plate assemblies. See Illustration 3.9. Enlarge the eight pilot holes in the side plate assemblies (from Step 7) to a diameter of 17 mm (.67"). See Illustration 4.10. Fabricate eight collars from SAE1018 steel to the dimensions shown in Illustration 5.11. Weld the eight fabricated collars in position on the side plate assemblies as shown in Illustration 4.
Illustration 5. Dimensions for collars.12. Fabricate eight threaded bosses from SAE1018 steel to the dimensions shown in Illustration 6.13. Enlarge the eight pilot holes (from Step 7) in the outer plate of main frame side rails. The holes must be large enough to insert the threaded bosses. See Illustration 7.14. Insert the threaded bosses into the main frame assembly until the surface of the boss is 6 mm (.24") below the outer surface of the outer plate. Weld the threaded bosses in position as shown in Illustration 7.15. Install the side plate assemblies with eight 5P8247 Washers and S1566 Bolts. See Illustration 8.16. Use weld to plug the three former mounting holes in the main frame rails. See Illustration 3.
