Removal Procedure
Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Lower the scraper bowl to the ground and engage the parking brake. Chock the wheels in order to prevent the machine from moving.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Make sure that the drain plug for the final drive is positioned at the bottom of the final drive. Remove plug (1) and the O-ring seal from the final drive. Drain the final drive and the differential. Drain the fluid into a suitable container. The final drive and the differential has a capacity of 61 L (16 US gal).

Remove six bolts (2) and the washers that secure cover (3) to the final drive. Remove cover (3) and the O-ring seal from the final drive.

Install a 1/2" - 13 NC eyebolt to axle shaft (4). Use the eyebolt in order to remove axle shaft (4) from the final drive.

Attach a nylon lifting strap and a hoist to axle (4), as shown. Remove axle shaft (4) from the final drive. The axle shaft weighs 27 kg (60 lb).
