Which Generate This Code:This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads erratic data from the position sensor.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
A shorted harness or an open harness
The transmission gear sensor has failed.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: Ensure that the CID 0700 FMI 02 for the sensor is active.Note: The ET status screen shows all of these wires. The ground verify (pin 7) should always be grounded. Two other wires should always be grounded in order to indicate the current gear selection. Three wires should always be grounded. Three wires will also be open.As a result of this diagnostic code, the transmission will not shift properly.Test Step 1. CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
At the connector for the sensor, measure the voltage from contact 4 to frame ground.Expected Result:The voltage should be approximately battery voltage.Results:
OK - The voltage is approximately the voltage of the battery. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage is approximately battery voltage.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness. Verify that the repair corrects the problem. Stop.Test Step 2. CHECK THE GROUND CIRCUIT.
The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
At the connector for the sensor, measure the resistance from contact 10 to frame ground.Expected Result:The resistance should be less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms.Repair: There is an open in the ground circuit. Repair the harness or replace the harness. Verify that the repair corrects the problem. Stop.Test Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS.
Use the ET in order to view the status of the transmission gear sensor.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the sensor from the machine harness.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Use the ET to view the status of the transmission gear sensor.
The "Group 8 status screen" of ET shows all of these wires. The ground verify (pin 1) should always be grounded. Two other wires should always be grounded in order to indicate the gear that is selected. Therefore, three wires should always be grounded. Three wires will also be open. Check all possible positions of the sensor. This will ensure proper operation of the sensor and the machine harness.Expected Result: All of the wires are working properly.Results:
OK - All of the wires are working properly.Repair: The sensor has failed. Replace the sensor. Verify that the sensor corrects the problem. Stop.
NOT OK - All of the wires are not working properly.Repair: The problem is in the circuit that did not display a correct indication. Repair the circuit or replace the harness. Stop.
