At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Slowly remove hydraulic tank filler cap (1) in order to relieve the system pressure.Note: The pilot filter is located in the compartment in front of the hydraulic tank on the right side of the machine.

Turn the knob, and lift open the top cover of the compartment in front of the hydraulic oil tank.
Remove the retaining bolts that secure the front cover of the compartment in front of the hydraulic oil tank. Remove the front cover and store the front cover in a secure location.
Position a suitable container below oil filter housing (4). Remove drain plug (5) from the bottom of the oil filter housing and allow the oil to drain into the container below.
Remove the oil filter housing by loosening the housing with a 1-1/4 inch socket or box end wrench at the bottom of the housing.
Properly dispose of the used oil filter element contained in the oil filter housing. Also, properly dispose of the O-ring seal located in the groove at the top of the oil filter housing.
Wash the oil filter housing in clean nonflammable solvent. Dry the housing thoroughly.
Clean the oil filter mounting base. Make sure that none of the material from the used O-ring seal remains with the filter mounting base.
Inspect the O-ring seal on the drain plug that was removed from the bottom of the oil filter housing. Replace the O-ring seal with a new one if necessary.
Apply hydraulic oil to the O-ring seal on the drain plug and install the drain plug in the bottom of the oil filter housing. Tighten the drain plug.
A new O-ring seal for the oil filter housing is supplied with the new oil filter element. Install the new O-ring seal in the groove at the top of the oil filter housing.
Install the new oil filter element in the oil filter housing by carefully sliding the filter element over the center tube in the housing.Note: The center tube in the housing and the oil filter element are keyed. The oil filter element will install over the center tube of the housing in only one orientation.
